The History
The Three Horseshoes in Willian –
free of tie for the first time in 335 years
The Three Horseshoes is the oldest pub in Willian founded in 1684. It was purchased by Pryors Brewery in Baldock who were partners with Truman Hanbury Morris Brewery in Shoreditch. When John Pryor died in 1852 the family could not continue running the business and sold the brewery and tied estate to Simpsons Brewery of Royston in 1853.
They continued to trade the pub well until eventually selling to Greene King in 1954. The pub continued to flourish, as it was one of only a few pubs that could sell alcohol in the Letchworth Garden City district, which had banned alcohol sales in 1903. The Three Horseshoes was allowed to sell alcohol because it was established before the Garden City and subsequently served the residents of Letchworth Garden City as well as the people of Willian.
The Present
The freehold was sold in January 2018 and the Three Horseshoes became a true freehouse for the first time in 335 years.
Since then we have had Cask Marque and CAMRA accreditation and have just been awarded a 5 star rating by the environmental health following the refurbishment of our kitchen.
The beer garden has been completely refurbished and is now ready to serve the customers throughout the spring / summer months, we think it’s the best beer garden in Hertfordshire.
New Perfect Pint Cellar
We have also had a new perfect pint cellar installation and as well as everyone’s favourite beers and wines we have regional and local brewery direct supplies from regional and local breweries such as Church End Brewery who deliver the champion beer of great Britain “Goats Milk” as well as other favorite’s such as -Tring Brewery Sidepocket – Dark Star Hophead – T.T. landlord – Brains Rev James – Oakham JHB – Betty Stoggs plus live ciders like Rosies Pig” and more.
We want to keep a good selection of CAMRA favorite’s including cask stouts and porters as well as sticking with our local drinkers who really love the way we dispense our G.K. I.P.A. and Abbott Ale.
Kitchen refurbishment
